The ARGO Mission

The Argo Mission – Sailing for Climate Change Solutions

We plan to deploy our Argo float mid Atlantic when we cross from the Cape Verdes to French Guiana, until then it has one of the best berths on Danu!  Before we left we had ‘ARGO’ at Kilcolgan Educate Together, Lilian and Ruairí’s school.  Third and fifth class all signed ARGO before it goes to 2,000 metres.

Once deployed the Argo float will sink to 2,000 meters and will measure temperature and salinity from 2,000m to the surface.  The Argo float then sends the data back to the Marine Institute via a satellite.

Knowing the temperature and salinity (or saltiness) levels of the Ocean in many different places helps us to understand how the Ocean affects the earth’s climate and to monitor any of these changes.

There are over 3,800 Argo floats active in the Ocean at the moment and each one sends new data to the satellites every 10 minutes!  That’s a lot of information, but there is a lot of Ocean on our earth too!
